I thought I would work on my draft comparisons. I’m going to use Kevin O’Conner’s big board for the Ringer when I do this to both save time and to keep me in check with some of my guys I like way more than I should.
1- Zion Williamson, Duke, 18.8, 6’7, 285
Ok, Obviously the best prospect, definitely the best since I started taking this seriously after the Anthony Davis draft. He’s a combination of Charles Barkley and Larry Johnson.
2- R.J. Barrett, Duke, 18.8, 6’7, 202 lbs.
So RJ and Ja are gonna divide people, it's going to come down to team fit between these 2. RJ is basically a Grant Hill/DeMar DeRozan type. Has a scorers mentality but not the best shooter.
3- Ja Morant, Murray St, 19.7, 6’3, 175.
Ja is an Athlete, think John Wall before all the injuries. He is by far the best passer in the class.
4- Jarrett Culver, Texas Tech, 20.2, 6’6?, 195.
Wont be a Batman but will be a great Robin. He also is rumored to be much taller than his listed 6’6. He’s very similar to Kris Middleton.
5- De’Andre Hunter, Virginia, 21.4, 6’7, 225.
The best comp I’ve seen is Louol Deng, and be honest, in today’s NBA what team wouldn’t want prime Deng. He sells out on Defense and can shoot. Perfect number 3-5 starter.
6- Darius Garland, Vanderbilt, 19.2, 6’2, 172
Could be the best point in the class, a natural shooter but needs to work on his passing, think Dame Lillard when he first came into the league.
7- Cam Reddish, Duke, 19.6, 6’8, 218
I feel confident saying Reddish might be the most polarizing prospect in the draft this year. He just didn’t show any consistency for Duke but he was the only shooter on the team for most of the year. He did flash some defensive potential but his point forward capabilities did not show up like rumored.
8- Sekou Doumbouya, France, 18.3, 6’9, 230
The best international trained player, he’s a guard in a bigs body, but wasn't consistent, look for him to be a draft and stash guy, think Al-Farouq Aminu with a better jumper.
9- Goga Bitadze, Georgia, 19.7, 6’11, 250
A bully, think Ines Kanter if he wanted to play D. He will also probably need to be stashed a year but has great potential.
10- Brandon Clark, Gonzaga, 22.6, 6’8, 215
A defensive stud, think Paul Milsap or even PJ Tucker but he needs his jumper to be consistant.
11- Naz Little, UNC, 19.2, 6’6, 220
Some people thought Naz would be the #1 pick, obviously that hype was wrong, he struggled most of the year especially with shooting but he is so big and strong we hope he puts his physical profile together and turns into an elite defensive Forward.
12- Grant Williams, Tennessee, 20.4, 6’7, 236
How do we describe Williams? Boris Diaw? Dennis Rodman? The problem with not having a good comp means it’s hard to find an NBA role. He’s definitely talented though.
13- Jaxon Hayes, Texas, 18.9, 6’11, 220
Hayes was a tight end growing up, his dad was a tight end in the NFL. He is still learning but the kid has so much potential. think Clint Capela with more hair.
14- Bol Bol, Oregon, 19.4, 7’2, 234
Son of Manute Bol, he isn’t quite as tall as his dad, but the kid can shoot from 3, that being said he’s injury prone and doesn’t seem to love basketball, he could go top 5 or fall to the late 20s it just depends. Think Brooke Lopez this year.
15- Romeo Langford, Indiana, 19.5, 6’6, 215
If Romeo had a consistent 3 he’d be a top 5 player, he’s a throw back 2 guard with not weakness but no amazing strength, kinda like Caldwell-Pope.
16- Coby White, UNC, 19.2, 6’5, 185
I am gonna be honest this is a disrespectful ranking for Coby, his hair alone should be top 10, add in the fact he can shoot like Buddy Heild and is actually the age his college told us, he should be top 5. He can work his way into amazing finishes at the rim and act tries on D. I really like White and think he gets drafted way earlier than this.
17- PJ Washington, Kentucky, 20.6, 6’8, 228
What happens when a defensive stud suddenly gets a 3 point shot? He becomes a first round prospect, PJ is the most fun Kentucky guy this year.
18- Jontay Porter, Missouri, 19.4, 6’11, 240
Jontay is super skilled and a modern day big man, think discount Jokic, I wouldn’t draft him in the first round. 2 torn ACLs scares me too much.
19- Rui Hachimura, Gonzaga, 21.2, 6’8, 230
Think Jabari Parker without the baggage. He’s a scorer but not a shooter.
20- Nickel Alexander-Walker, Virginia Tech, 20.6, 6’5, 205
He's long like his cousin Shai Gilgeous-Alexander but he's more suited to play off ball. I like him.
21- Tyler Herro, Kentucky, 19.2, 6’5, 195
The most annoying player on an annoying team. He can shoot the ball but doesn’t do a ton else. When he actually does the little things he looks like a Star.
22- Kevin Porter Jr, USC, 19.0, 6’6, 218
Another guy with a huge range. This guy is Jamaal Crawford but has major attitude problems. If he puts it together he could be a fan favorite.
23- Talen Horton-Tucker, Iowa St., 18.4, 6’4, 233
A shooter with the body of an amazing defender. Here’s the problem he looks like he’s more allergic to defense than hipsters are to gluten.
24- Matisse Thybulle, Washington, 22.1, 6’5, 200
I’ll be honest this is the only guy on the list I didn’t watch this year, in the past he was a good defender apparently he’s now a great defender.
25- Keldon Johnson, Kentucky, 19.5, 6’6, 211
Ironi that at the beginning of the year Johnson was the Kentucky guy everyone was the most high on. Now he’s a borderline first rounder. He just doesn’t get blocks or steals. He also doesn’t have any consistency. Think a shorter Otto Porter jr.
26- Ty Jerome, Virginia, 21.8, 6’5, 195
If his feet are fast enough his shooting will keep him in the league. Hes like Jose Calderon. He shouldn’t start in his prime but probably will.
27- KZ Okpala, Stanford, 20.0, 6’9, 215
He looks like the perfect modern Wing. It‘s hard not to think Trevor Ariza watching him. He’s gonna be a great role player for a playoff team.
28- Bruno Fernando, Maryland, 20.7, 6’10, 240
Derrick Favors, add a better Jumper, he’s gonna be important to a team going forward.
29- Cam Johnson, UNC, 23.1, 6’9, 210
Ok, yes he’s super old for a first rounder, he’s also a straight up flamethrower. Any playoff team wants him on their bench. He can also play defense somewhat. Think Dorian Finney-Smith from the beginning of the year before his 3 abandoned him.
30- Daniel Gafford, Arkansas, 20.5, 6’11, 233
Gafford probably should have stayed in the draft last year. Jaxon Hayes is him but longer, faster, and younger, that being said he’s worth it as a bench big for any team in the league.
